Rev. Jack Rogers, Ph.D. NEW!
Rogers is the author of the best-selling Jesus, the Bible, and Homosexuality: Explode the Myths, Heal the Church, which is considered among the most respected books on the subject. Originally published in 2006, a second edition was released in 2009 that includes a study guide for group or personal reflection.

Rogers began his journey believing homosexuality is a sin and opposing the ordination of gays and lesbians. In 1993, he reluctantly accepted an invitation to join a Presbyterian task force to address the issue, but as he delved into it, his mind began to change.

“The process was both very serious and painful,” he writes in the book. “I wasn’t swayed by the culture or pressured by academic colleagues. I changed my mind initially by going back to the Bible and taking seriously its central message in our lives.”

In a review in Biblical Theology Bulletin, James A. Sanders writes that “Rogers’ book is so strong and convincing that it is going to be attacked, and probably quite viciously. In my view, however, it knocks the props out from under those who in our day once more, as many times on past issues, deny the depth, height, and breadth of the gospel of the grace of God in Jesus Christ.”

Jeffrey S. Siker, chair of the department of theological studies at Loyola Marymount University, praises the book for being “masterful at describing how the church can learn from its past struggles in moving forward beyond the current divide. Rogers issues a prophetic and persuasive call for a more inclusive and more faithful church.”

Rogers is professor emeritus of theology at San Francisco Theological Seminary and moderator of the 213th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). He also served as vice-president of San Francisco Theological Seminary and founded its Southern California campus. Earlier, he was professor of philosophical theology at Fuller Theological Seminary for 17 years.
